THIS WEEK IN MY GARDEN: JAN11 WEEK2

‘Tis the season of tropical fruits from nearby Tzaneen, the fruit basket of South Africa: mangoes, litchis, papaya and pineapples. And of the Pineapple lily, or Eucomis of which we have several species growing wild and a few cultivars, especially of the ‘red’ ones, in the garden. Here is a particularly fine example growing in the Upper Rosemary Border – a joy from close-by, but also from the veranda of the big house at the moment,

Here is another a few meters further along the border, with a red berberis for company and yellow foliage for contrast. Oh yes – and Rosa rugosa, an interesting pairing, shown below in a rather wet detail shot.

  1. Jack, are the roses the ones that look like pomegranates? Just teasing!

Would love some Eucomis like yours, but am most afraid they would croak. . . .
